TCN Restores Power to Sokoto Following Substation Fire

by Adenike Adeodun

After the recent fire at the Birnin Kebbi Substation, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) quickly restored bulk power to Sokoto State. They announced this achievement on Sunday, noting the restoration occurred at 6 p.m. on September 15th.

According to a report by The Guardian, Ndidi Mbah, TCN’s general manager for public affairs, shared this update from Birnin Kebbi. He explained that the company promptly reconnected Sokoto State through the Talata Mafara Substation.

The company is now focusing on restoring power to Kebbi and other affected areas. “Our engineering team, with support from our Managing Director/CEO and the Executive Director of Transmission Service Provider (TSP), are actively working on the ground. Their goal? To reconnect Kebbi to the national grid using another substation,” said Mbah.

He further detailed the plan, emphasizing using the 150MVA and 60MVA power transformers at the substation, which the fire didn’t damage. TCN also dispatched teams with essential equipment from different regions to speed up repairs.

After the fire, Mr. Mbah lauded Dr. Sule Abdulaziz, TCN’s CEO, for his swift commitment. Disturbed by the incident, Abdulaziz immediately aimed to restore power in Sokoto through the Talata Mafara substation. He also highlighted the need to provide Kebbi with a temporary back-feed and emphasized the long-term reliance on the 150MVA power transformer.

In conclusion, Mbah thanked Sokoto and Kebbi States’ leaders and citizens for their patience during this crisis. He firmly stated, “We’re dedicated to finishing repairs at the substation and ensuring reliable electricity for all affected areas.”
