The Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF) is gearing up to host the highly anticipated second edition of the West Africa Scrabble Championship in Abuja, set to take place in November. This regional championship is a collaborative effort involving Scrabble Associations from Ghana, The Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria, with a mission to promote this intellectually stimulating game in West Africa.
Engineer Toke Aka, the President of NSF, has revealed that the championship is expected to attract 75 players from the five participating West African countries. Nigeria’s very own Eta Karo clinched the individual category victory in the inaugural edition of this championship, while Team Nigeria emerged victorious in the team event held in Ghana the previous year.
The choice of Abuja as the host city for this regional Scrabble tournament stems from its strategic advantages. Engineer Aka cited Abuja’s central location, excellent hotel facilities, strong government presence, and rich sporting culture as key factors contributing to this decision.
To ensure the smooth execution of this event, the NSF estimates a budget of approximately 50 million. The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) responsible for overseeing the championship will be officially announced in the coming month.
The West Africa Scrabble Championship (WASC) holds significant importance in the NSF’s annual calendar. In the inaugural edition, nine Nigerian players secured positions within the top 10 ranks, underlining Nigeria’s prowess in the competitive world of Scrabble.
With preparations well underway and the Scrabble community buzzing with anticipation, the West Africa Scrabble Championship promises to be an exhilarating contest of intellect and strategy. As participants from West African nations converge in Abuja, the region’s Scrabble enthusiasts eagerly await this celebration of linguistic skill and mental agility.
