Police Investigate Officers Over Alleged N80m Extortion Linked to Senior Officials

by Victor Adetimilehin

The Nigeria Police Force has initiated an investigation into allegations of extortion amounting to N80 million, allegedly involving a surveillance contractor, Atubi Davison, and several police officers. This inquiry was prompted by a petition filed by a Delta State-based rights advocate, Israel Joe.

According to the petitioner, an Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, along with two other officers, is implicated in the alleged extortion. The officers are said to have claimed they would distribute a portion of the ill-gotten funds, offering N30 million to IG Egbetokun and N16 million to the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Polycarp Abonyi.

Additionally, the petitioner alleges that the police officers seized a gold necklace from Davison, valued at N4 million.

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that the Monitoring Unit of the Inspector-General of Police has commenced an investigation into these serious allegations. Adejobi emphasized the need for fairness and impartiality in the investigative process and stated that the complainant, Israel Joe, would be contacted to provide further information regarding the matter.

Israel Joe’s petition, dated September 21 and stamped by the office of the IG, outlines the events leading up to the investigation. Joe reported that on September 14, 2023, the police conducted a search of Davison’s residence in Peace Avenue Road, Egbelu, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. During the search, the police discovered local and foreign currencies amounting to N100 million, intended for payment to personnel securing pipeline facilities in the Niger Delta.

Despite evidence indicating that the money was intended for legitimate purposes, it was confiscated by the police, along with two cars and a gold necklace. Four individuals, including a female, were arrested at Davison’s residence during the operation. The funds, however, were not returned.

Joe recounted his interactions with the Assistant Commissioner of Police, State CIID, who informed him that the money was being treated as part of an alleged kidnapping case. The ACP mentioned that they were unsure if someone would report the money as missing or consider it ransom. Subsequently, the officers proposed a plan to distribute the funds, including sending N30 million to the IG, N16 million to the state Commissioner of Police, and retaining a significant portion.

The activist is demanding a thorough investigation, the refund of the money, and accountability for all officers involved. He underscores the importance of paying surveillance workers to prevent potential damage to oil facilities, which could adversely impact Nigeria’s economy.

In response, Adejobi, in an official statement, reiterated the seriousness with which the Nigeria Police Force views these allegations and its commitment to a transparent investigation. He also cautioned the public against fraudulent individuals who exploit the names of senior police officers for personal gain.
