United Nigeria Airlines Joins IATA Membership

by Oluwatosin Racheal Alabi

United Nigeria Airlines has secured a membership spot with the International Air Transport Association (IATA), marking a significant milestone for the airline.

The official confirmation of United Nigeria Airlines’ IATA membership came through a letter delivered to the airline’s Chairman and CEO, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, on October 9, 2023. William Walsh, IATA’s Director General, penned the letter expressing his pleasure in welcoming the airline into the IATA community.

In the letter, Walsh outlined IATA’s key priorities, emphasizing safety enhancement, sustainable industry growth, pushing for digital transformation, and striving to be the primary source of aviation data. “We represent approximately 300 airlines from over 120 countries, aiming to foster a safe and sustainable air transport industry that unifies and enriches our world,” Walsh added.

Responding to the IATA inclusion, Mazi Osita Okonkwo, Chief Operating Officer of United Nigeria Airlines, viewed this membership as an affirmation of the airline’s commitment to achieving global aviation standards. “This is a significant step forward in our strategic push towards becoming a globally recognized carrier. Our IATA membership reinforces our dedication to ensuring unparalleled safety, efficiency, and customer service,” stated Okonkwo.

This IATA acknowledgment follows the airline’s accreditation as an IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certified carrier in May. Looking ahead, United Nigeria Airlines is actively working on its expansion strategy, eyeing direct flight operations to prominent destinations like Accra in Ghana. The airline also plans to enhance its services to Sokoto, Kano, Jos, and Benin.
