Nigerian Troops Arrest Key Arms Sellers to Bandits

Nigerian troops make a significant stride in national security by arresting arms suppliers

by Victor Adetimilehin

In a strategic move against insurgency, Nigerian troops have intercepted three suspected gun suppliers alleged to be associated with Bello Turji, militant leader. As reported by Defence Media Opеrations, this was an important achievement in the battle to curb terrorism and banditry in Nigeria.

The arrests conducted between November 14 and 17, 2023, have revealed an essential aspect of the insurgency network in Nigeria. According to Maj. Gеn. Edward Buba of Defence Media Operations suspects these were intercepted while transporting ammunition to Turji in Zamfara state. These included 504 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition, 100 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, three RPG charges, mobile phones, an ATM card and a vehicle.

Belloturji was very much involved in many atrocities like the killing of about 200 people in January of 2022 and also an attack that led to death of people in Garki village. Despite numerous air strikes, Turji managed to escape being captured, which makes the arrest of his suppliers a great success.

According to a report by Punch, improvised explosive devices (lETTER) was found in Biu, Borno state which indicates continued surveillance and counter terrorism measures. However, the Defence Headquarters reported a total of 99 terrorists eliminated and 198 suspects arrested in different operations.

Nigerian soldiers have also made noticeable efforts in countering oil theft and kidnaps. They were able to halt theft valued at over a billion naira and foil illicit refineries in Niger Delta as well as rescue 139 hostages. This multipronged approach underpins the army’s involvement in securing the country in every aspect.

The efforts that the Nigerian army embarks in interrupting terrorist actions and protecting civilians provide some hope amid a difficult security situation. Therefore, this latest success is not only triumph over a single threat, but proof of strength and determination of forces in maintaining national security and peace.
