by Victor Adetimilehin

The Nigerian government has promised to issue a definite pronouncement on the individuals responsible for the multiple explosions that rocked the city of Ibadan last week. The blast killed five people, injured 77 others, and damaged 58 houses in the Adeyi area of the Old Bodija district.

The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, through its media assistant, Segun Tomori, said on Sunday that it is waiting for the outcome of forensic investigations that will determine the real cause of the blast, the type of explosives that triggered it, and the circumstances leading to the tragic incident.

Forensic Investigation Ordered

The ministry said it has deployed its mine inspectorate officers to the scene of the explosion to join other security agencies to unravel the mystery behind the blast. It also commended the Oyo State government for mobilizing a relief response to the victims and the affected community.

The Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, had earlier said that preliminary investigations revealed that explosive devices were stored inside a house in the Bodija area by illegal miners. He stated that he intended to use the explosives for mining activities in another town.

The governor also said that the state government has set up a committee to investigate the matter and prevent future occurrences. He assured the residents of the state that his administration will do everything possible to ensure their safety and security.

President Tinubu Condoles with Victims

The President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, also expressed his sympathy and solidarity with the people of Oyo State over the unfortunate incident. He placed a telephone call to Governor Makinde, in the presence of the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Dele Alake, to commiserate with him, the victims, and their families.

The president also directed the minister to work closely with the state government and the security agencies to get to the bottom of the matter and bring the culprits to justice. He prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and the speedy recovery of the injured.

A Call for Responsible Mining Practices

The Ibadan blast has raised concerns about the safety and environmental implications of mining activities in Nigeria. The country has abundant mineral resources, but they are often exploited by illegal and unregulated miners who use dangerous methods and chemicals.

The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has been working to reform the mining sector and promote responsible and sustainable practices. It has also been collaborating with other stakeholders to address the challenges of illegal mining, such as insecurity, environmental degradation, and revenue loss.

The ministry urged the public to report any suspicious or unlawful mining activities to the relevant authorities. It also appealed to the mining operators and communities to adhere to the safety standards and regulations in the industry.

Despite the tragedy and trauma caused by the Ibadan blast, the affected community has not lost hope. Many residents have expressed their gratitude to the government and the humanitarian agencies for their swift response and assistance. They have also shown resilience and solidarity in the face of adversity.

Some of the victims who survived the blast have shared their stories of survival and recovery. They have also expressed their faith in God and their optimism for the future. They said they are looking forward to rebuilding their lives and their homes with the support of the government and the society.
