In a decisive move against the backdrop of escalating violence and terrorism in Nigeria, Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has proclaimed that the solution to the pervasive insecurity plaguing the north and the country at large lies in the realm of good governance.
During a recent meeting at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House in Kaduna with members of the Kaduna State Elders Forum, the Governor underscored his administration’s dedication to addressing the root causes of terrorism through strategic governance initiatives.
The gathering, which was convened following Governor Sani’s affirming victory at the Supreme Court, provided a platform for the discussion of the multifaceted challenges confronting the state and the broader Northern region.
The governor identified poverty and unemployment as principal contributors to the insecurity crisis, particularly emphasizing the unique challenges faced by the North-West region. Unlike the ideologically driven insurgency in the North-East, the North-West grapples with economically motivated banditry and kidnapping, fueled by hopelessness, a lack of education, and economic stagnation.
Governor Sani’s approach to combating these challenges involves a blend of kinetic and non-kinetic strategies, with a strong focus on fostering good governance. “The most important aspect of the non-kinetic approach is good governance,” stated Sani.
According to a report by The Sun, he elaborated on the necessity of addressing educational deficits and financial exclusion, which he believes are at the heart of the region’s security issues. Over 85% of the North-West population, according to Sani, suffers from either a lack of education or financial exclusion, leading to widespread poverty.
To combat these systemic issues, the governor announced a significant international collaboration with Kuwait, which has pledged $28 million to support Kaduna State’s efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children. This initiative is part of a broader strategic plan to lift the region out of poverty and improve access to education, thereby addressing one of the fundamental drivers of insecurity.
Furthermore, Governor Sani detailed the state’s ongoing security measures, including the establishment of two new Forward Operation Bases in strategic locations to combat banditry and kidnapping. This military support, coupled with the forthcoming Security Trust Fund 2024, signifies a robust commitment to enhancing security infrastructure in Kaduna State.
The meeting with the Kaduna State Elders Forum, which included prominent figures such as General Zamani Lekwot (retd) and Alhaji Abubakar Mustapha, served as a testament to the community’s backing of Governor Sani’s governance approach. The Forum’s leaders lauded the governor’s focus on rural development and his comprehensive strategy to address the challenges facing Kaduna State and the Northern Region.
As Kaduna State embarks on these ambitious governance and security initiatives, the eyes of the nation are on Governor Sani and his administration, watching closely for the outcomes of these efforts to bring lasting peace and stability to a region long tormented by violence and turmoil.
