Rising airfares crisis

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has taken proactive steps to address the persistent rise in airfares, setting up a committee dedicated to reducing the cost burden on travelers. Acting Director-General of NCAA, Chris Najomo, announced the formation of the committee on Monday, highlighting the authority’s commitment to tackling the escalating airfare prices, particularly for international flights.

In a tweet, Najomo stated, “It has come to the notice of this authority about the increase and high cost of airfare, especially on international travels. And the NCAA in the view of trying to make sure that these airfares are brought down, have decided to set up a high-powered committee, which will look at all the variances and how we can bring these fares down. We’ve met with the airlines and other stakeholders and other agencies. We will make sure that this is done.”

The move by the NCAA comes amidst ongoing efforts by the government to resolve outstanding repatriation owed to foreign airlines operating in Nigeria. Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria indicates that foreign airlines repatriated a significant sum of N795.48 billion from Nigeria within a six-month period.

During the first and second quarters of 2023, foreign airlines withdrew $1.76 billion (converted to naira at N451/$) from Nigeria. This figure includes expenditures on tickets by passengers, cargo shipments, and other related transactions. The establishment of the committee underscores the authority’s recognition of the financial strain imposed on travelers by exorbitant airfare prices. By engaging with airlines, stakeholders, and relevant agencies, the NCAA aims to explore avenues to mitigate these costs and enhance affordability for passengers.

The initiative aligns with broader efforts to foster a conducive environment for air travel and promote economic growth in the aviation sector. As the committee begins its work, stakeholders eagerly anticipate the implementation of measures aimed at curbing airfare hikes and improving accessibility to air transportation services.

With air travel playing a pivotal role in facilitating both domestic and international connectivity, the NCAA’s proactive approach reflects its commitment to ensuring the viability and sustainability of Nigeria’s aviation industry. As discussions progress and strategies are developed, passengers can anticipate potential relief from the financial burden associated with air travel, fostering greater accessibility and convenience for travelers across the country.
