In a significant show of appreciation, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), the Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has publicly thanked President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support in the nation’s battle against drug abuse and trafficking. This commendation came during Marwa’s inspection of the nearly completed NDLEA barracks in Yola, Adamawa State, a project that symbolizes a leap forward in ensuring the safety and welfare of the agency’s personnel.
Marwa, addressing journalists, highlighted the importance of continuity in governance, noting the seamless transition of support from President Muhammadu Buhari to President Tinubu. “Our officers are on the frontline, seizing, arresting, and prosecuting criminals involved in drug-related offenses. However, the challenge has always been the security and welfare of our staff, who are at constant risk due to their close proximity to the criminals they apprehend,” Marwa explained. The construction of the barracks, initiated under President Buhari and vigorously continued by President Tinubu, stands as a testament to the government’s dedication to the cause.
The NDLEA chief praised the quality and standard of the barracks, emphasizing that this initiative is just the beginning. “Our aim is to establish barracks in each of the six geopolitical zones for equity and balance. This endeavor not only protects our personnel but also strengthens their resolve to tackle the drug menace more effectively,” he added. Marwa expressed hope that future administrations would extend this initiative, ensuring that all 36 state commands, including the Federal Capital Territory and Special Area commands, are equipped with similar facilities.
This strategic move to provide secure housing for NDLEA officers marks a critical step in enhancing the agency’s operational effectiveness. By addressing the long-standing concerns of security and welfare, the government not only boosts the morale of the agency’s workforce but also reinforces its commitment to eradicating drug trafficking and abuse from the country.
As the NDLEA barracks in Yola nears its commissioning, the gesture serves as a clear signal of the government’s resolve to support the NDLEA’s mission. With increased backing from the highest levels of government, the agency is better positioned to make significant strides in its fight against narcotics, ensuring a safer and drug-free Nigeria.
The acknowledgment of President Tinubu’s support by the NDLEA underscores the collaborative effort required to combat the pervasive issue of drug trafficking and abuse. As Nigeria continues to face challenges in this arena, the establishment of secure and dedicated barracks for NDLEA personnel is a step in the right direction, promising a more fortified front against the scourge of narcotics in the country.
