Osun Governor Takes Action Against Sexual Violence

Osun Establishes Committee and Expedites Justice for Women and Children

by Victor Adetimilehin

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun state, Nigeria, has taken a multi-pronged approach to address sexual violence and protect vulnerable populations. This initiative includes the formation of an action committee and measures to expedite legal processes for women and children.

Combating Sexual Violence Through Mobile Courts

A core aspect of the plan involves establishing mobile courts specifically designed to tackle sexual and gender-based violence. This aligns with resolutions agreed upon by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and the Osun state government. Mobile courts offer a more accessible and potentially faster path to justice for victims compared to traditional court systems.

The jurisdiction of these mobile courts extends beyond sexual violence. They will also handle cases of child abuse, particularly street begging, aiming to curb this harmful practice. Additionally, the courts will expedite trials for women and children currently held in correctional facilities. This broader approach ensures a more comprehensive effort to protect vulnerable populations within Osun state.

Executive Order to Free Unjustly Incarcerated Women

Governor Adeleke’s commitment to justice goes beyond establishing new courts. He has directed the Commissioner for Justice to prepare an executive order for the release of women who have been unjustly incarcerated within Osun. The Justice Ministry will compile a comprehensive list of these women to ensure a fair and transparent process.

The newly formed action committee comprises key figures dedicated to women’s rights and legal matters. This diverse group includes the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon (Mrs) Ayobola Awolowo; the Commissioner for Federal Affairs, Hon (Mrs) Adenike Adeleke; a representative for the Attorney General, Barrister Nurudeen Kareem Esq.; the Commissioner for Youth Development, Hon Moshood Olagunju; and the President of the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Abisola Ariwodola.

The committee’s primary responsibility is to implement the joint communique established during the meeting between the Governor and the Federal Minister of Women Affairs. Their combined expertise and collaborative effort are crucial for tackling the complex issue of sexual violence and upholding the rights of women and children in Osun state.

A Beacon of Hope for Justice and Protection

Governor Adeleke’s actions represent a significant step forward in Osun’s fight against sexual violence and the protection of vulnerable individuals. The establishment of mobile courts, the potential release of unjustly incarcerated women, and the focus on expediting legal processes for women and children all demonstrate a commitment to building a more just and equitable society.

This initiative also serves as a beacon of hope for other Nigerian states grappling with similar issues. By prioritizing these critical matters, Osun paves the way for a future where women and children feel safer and have greater access to justice.
