During the 60th birthday celebration of Lawrence Achudume, Founder and Lead Pastor of Victory Life Bible Church International, held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Senior Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo of Kingsway International Christian Centre in London delivered a compelling homily that underscored the urgent need for governmental intervention in Nigeria’s deepening poverty and hunger crisis.
In his address, Ashimolowo painted a vivid picture of the socio-economic challenges that grip Nigeria, emphasizing the widening gap between the affluent and the impoverished. He warned that the growing disparity poses a significant threat to the stability and future of the nation. “There is great poverty in the land,” he stated, “and there is fire on the mountain.” Ashimolowo’s message was clear: immediate and effective action is needed to alleviate the suffering caused by rampant poverty and to bolster the purchasing power of the Nigerian populace, which has been severely eroded by hyperinflation and the declining value of the naira.
Ashimolowo also touched upon the spiritual dimensions of the crisis, lamenting that many have strayed from the true gospel of Christ, which he suggested could guide the nation back to prosperity and unity. He questioned the authenticity of the gospel being practiced by some, hinting at a drift towards materialism and away from genuine spiritual values.
The event also featured remarks from notable guests who praised the celebrant’s contributions to society. The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Bassey Uno, represented by his Deputy, Akon Eyakenyi, described Achudume as a unifying figure who has played a pivotal role in bridging divides among politicians and Christians in Akwa Ibom State. He lauded Achudume for his integrity and consistent truthfulness, even to those in power.
Bamidele Abiodun, the wife of Ogun State Governor, highlighted Achudume’s longstanding commitment to the ministry, which has spanned over three decades. She referred to him as a “light to the world,” whose interactions always result in positive outcomes for those he meets. She expressed her prayers for Achudume to continue his good works with divine grace.
In his own remarks, Achudume reflected on his life’s journey, attributing his successes and the impact he has made to divine assistance. “I am a man helped by God,” he declared, acknowledging his humble beginnings and the divine grace that surrounds him.
The convergence of spiritual leadership and calls for governmental action at this event underscores the critical role that religious leaders often play in addressing societal issues in Nigeria. Ashimolowo’s urgent call to action serves not only as a spiritual exhortation but also as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that the Nigerian government holds towards its citizens, especially in times of economic hardship and societal need.
