Kogi Governor Visits Yahaya Bello During Tense Standoff with EFCC

EFCC Surrounds Bello's Residence in Money Laundering Case

by Victor Adetimilehin

Kogi Governor Usman Ododo made a surprising visit to the Abuja residence of his predecessor, Yahaya Bello, on Wednesday afternoon. This development unfolded amidst a tense standoff between Bello and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

EFCC Surrounds Bello’s Residence

Earlier that day, EFCC operatives descended upon Yahaya Bello’s residence in Abuja’s Wuse Zone 4. Journalists witnessed a heavy security presence, with armed EFCC personnel, police officers, Department of State Security (DSS) agents, Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) officers, and Bello’s private security detail all surrounding the property.

The exact reason behind the EFCC’s actions remains unclear. The commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, was unavailable for comment at the time of this report. However, this incident coincides with ongoing money laundering charges against Bello.

Bello Faces Money Laundering Charges

In March 2024, the EFCC filed amended charges against Yahaya Bello, his nephew Ali, Dauda Sulaiman, and Abdulsalam Hudu before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja. These charges allege that the group misappropriated N84 billion.

Yahaya Bello’s media office responded swiftly, issuing a statement condemning the EFCC’s operation. The statement urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene and restrain the commission.

The statement also highlighted a court injunction granted on February 9, 2024, by the High Court of Justice, Lokoja Division, in Suit No. HCL/68M/2024. This injunction prohibits the EFCC from harassing, arresting, detaining, or prosecuting Bello until the conclusion of a fundamental rights enforcement action.

Governor Ododo’s Visit Raises Questions

Governor Ododo’s visit during this standoff has sparked speculation about his motives. Some interpret it as a gesture of solidarity towards a fellow politician facing legal trouble. Others suspect it might be an attempt to intimidate the EFCC or influence the ongoing investigation.

The situation remains fluid, and further developments are expected. It’s unclear whether the EFCC will attempt to arrest Bello or if a peaceful resolution can be reached. We will continue to update this story as new information becomes available.

The tense standoff between the EFCC and Yahaya Bello raises concerns about the possibility of an amicable resolution. Bello’s legal team is likely to challenge the EFCC’s actions in court, potentially leading to a protracted legal battle.
