Kaduna Police Bust Attempt to Smuggle Drugs to Detainee in Bread

Police Commissioner Commends Officers, Urges Continued Vigilance

by Victor Adetimilehin

Nigerian authorities in Kaduna State have thwarted a cunning attempt to smuggle drugs to a suspect in police custody. The incident, which unfolded on May 26th, 2024, involved three individuals who were apprehended for trying to conceal narcotics within an ordinary loaf of bread.

Deceptive Delivery Attempt Raises Concerns

The Kaduna State Police Command revealed details of the foiled operation through their spokesperson, ASP Mansir Hassan. According to the statement, the three suspects – identified as John Solomon (38), Kunle Oluwale (45), and James Daniel Baba (45) – arrived at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Kaduna with what appeared to be an innocuous loaf of bread. However, a closer inspection would have revealed a more sinister purpose.

Hassan explained that the men, all residents of Abuja’s Sabon Wuse district, approached the Charge Room Officer (CRO) with a peculiar request. They attempted to persuade the officer to deliver the bread to a suspect named Gideon Amao, currently under investigation by the SCID. The seemingly ordinary loaf of bread, however, held a hidden danger – an undisclosed quantity of illegal drugs.

The CRO’s alertness and adherence to protocol proved crucial in thwarting this attempt. Their suspicion likely stemmed from the unusual request or the possibility of tampering with the delivered item.  Moreover, this vigilance highlights the constant vigilance required by law enforcement officers, who must remain alert to even the most seemingly ordinary occurrences.

Police Commissioner Commends Officers

Following the arrest, Kaduna State Police Commissioner Audu Dabigi commended the officers involved in the operation. He specifically praised their attentiveness and highlighted the importance of such vigilance in preventing similar attempts in the future. Commissioner Dabigi emphasized the need for officers to remain constantly on guard against any potential security breaches.

The authorities wasted no time in securing evidence. Photographs were taken of the suspects and the seized drugs, which will likely play a crucial role in the ongoing investigation. Police officials are tight-lipped about the details of the investigation, but have assured the public that further information will be released as it becomes available.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian law enforcement in tackling the flow of illegal narcotics within the country’s borders. It highlights the resourcefulness of those involved in the drug trade and the constant need for vigilance by authorities. However, the successful operation in Kaduna demonstrates the importance of well-trained and alert officers who can thwart such attempts and prevent illegal substances from reaching those in custody.
