Nigerian Students in UK Face Deportation Over Unpaid Fees

Teesside University Students Protest Impending Departure

by Victor Adetimilehin

Nigerian students enrolled at Teesside University in the UK are facing a potential deportation crisis due to unpaid tuition fees. The situation escalated after the university issued directives for these students to leave the country. This prompted protests on campus by the affected students on May 22nd, 2024, drawing the attention of the Nigerian government.

Nigerian Delegation Seeks Resolution with University

In response to the student protests and the ensuing concerns, the Nigerian government has taken action. A delegation led by Ambassador Christian Okeke, representing the Nigerian Embassy in the UK, is scheduled to meet with officials from Teesside University management. The delegation will also include leaders of the Nigerian Students Union in the UK. Their primary objective is to find a solution that allows the affected students to remain and complete their studies without facing deportation.

The Nigerian government’s intervention follows a virtual meeting held on May 29th, 2024. The meeting was chaired by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), and included Ambassador Okeke, Yemi Soile (President of the Nigerian Students Union UK), and several of the students directly affected by the potential deportation. Ms. Dabiri-Erewa used the opportunity to urge the students to “remain calm and not to take the law into their own hands.” She also made a direct appeal to Teesside University, stressing the importance of treating the students “fairly and justly.”

Students Hopeful for Resolution, Cause of Fee Issue Unclear

The exact number of Nigerian students facing deportation at Teesside University remains unclear. However, the students who participated in the protest and the virtual meeting have expressed hope for a positive outcome from the upcoming meeting between the Nigerian delegation and university officials. This hope hinges on finding a solution that allows them to continue their studies in the UK. Unfortunately, the specific reasons behind the unpaid fees remain unclear at this time.

Potential Explanations for Fee Issues

There are several possible explanations for the situation at Teesside University. One possibility is that some Nigerian students may have encountered financial difficulties that prevent them from meeting their tuition fee obligations. Fluctuations in currency exchange rates could also be a contributing factor, making it more challenging for students to convert their Nigerian Naira into British Pounds to cover their university fees. Additionally, there’s a chance that administrative or communication issues between the university and the students might have played a role in the situation escalating.

The potential deportation of these students could have a significant impact on both the students themselves and Teesside University. For the students, deportation would disrupt their academic progress and potentially force them to abandon their studies altogether. This could also have negative financial implications, as they may have already invested significant resources into their education in the UK. For Teesside University, the deportation of a group of students could have a negative impact on its reputation and its ability to attract international students in the future.
