Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has revealed his commitment to Nigeria’s industrialization as the reason he avoids owning houses in London or the United States. Dangote emphasized that having properties abroad would distract him from his primary goal of transforming Nigeria into an industrial powerhouse.
Focus on Industrialization
Speaking to journalists at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in the Ibeju-Lekki area of Lagos State, Dangote explained his rationale. “The reason I don’t have a London or American house is solely because I wanted to focus on industrialization in Nigeria,” he said. Dangote believes that owning properties abroad would create unnecessary distractions, drawing his attention away from his work in Nigeria.
“I figured that if I had those houses, there would be one reason or the other for me to visit those places, thereby causing distraction for me,” Dangote added. He highlighted his deep passion for the Nigerian dream, noting that aside from his residence in Lagos, he only has another house in his home state, Kano, and a rented one in Abuja.
Praises from Family and Associates
Fatima Dangote, the Group Executive Director of Commercial Operations, lauded her father’s dedication and perseverance. “I have not seen anyone as hardworking as my father. Sometimes I wonder how he never gives up,” she said. Fatima expressed her belief that if more people in Nigeria shared her father’s work ethic, the country would see significant improvements.
Earlier, the Group CEO disclosed that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) now holds only a 7.2% stake in the Dangote refinery. This figure has decreased from the initial 20%. “NNPC no longer owns a 20% stake in the Dangote refinery. They were meant to pay their balance in June but have yet to fulfill the obligations. Now, they only own a 7.2% stake in the refinery,” he said.
Industrial Commitment Over Distractions
Dangote’s decision not to own properties abroad underlines his unwavering focus on his industrial projects in Nigeria. His petroleum refinery in Lagos is one of the largest in the world and represents a significant step towards self-sufficiency in fuel production for Nigeria. By not dividing his attention, Dangote ensures that his projects receive the full benefit of his leadership and vision.
This strategic focus has been a cornerstone of Dangote’s success. His dedication to Nigerian industrialization has not only made him the richest man in Africa but also a pivotal figure in the continent’s economic landscape. His work has created thousands of jobs and contributed significantly to Nigeria’s GDP.
Dangote’s story is an inspiring testament to the power of focused dedication. By prioritizing his home country over potential distractions abroad, he has been able to drive significant industrial and economic advancements in Nigeria.
