Nigerian Lawyer Advocates Peace in Economic Crisis Protests

Calls for Nonviolent Response to Rising Hunger, Poor Governance

by Adenike Adeodun

Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, a prominent Nigerian lawyer, has made a passionate plea to Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector General of Police, urging the protection of young Nigerians set to protest against the nation’s worsening hunger and economic conditions. The protests, scheduled for tomorrow, aim to voice frustrations over the current economic downturn.

Adegboruwa issued a statement emphasizing the importance of non-violence during these demonstrations. He stressed that the protesters, being citizens and the nation’s youth, deserve protection rather than aggression. His appeal extends to the highest levels of government, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whom he urged to reconsider the recent policies on oil subsidy removal and currency devaluation—policies he believes have plunged Nigeria into a severe economic crisis.

The call for action resonates at a time when the cost of living in Nigeria has soared, making basic staples like yam, rice, and beans unaffordable for many. Adegboruwa criticized the government’s approach, particularly highlighting the disconnect between official spending and the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians. He questioned the justification behind extravagant expenditures by government officials amidst widespread economic distress.

Adegboruwa implored President Tinubu to face the crisis head-on and to halt unnecessary government spending that exacerbates the nation’s financial strain. He called for an immediate reversal of economic policies that have done more harm than good, advocating for a shift towards measures that genuinely support the populace.

In addition to addressing the president, Adegboruwa also directed his message towards national security agencies. He insisted that they recognize the constitutional right to peaceful protest and provide safety to demonstrators rather than suppressing them. His directive is clear: no bullets should be fired, and the military should not be involved in managing the protests.

The senior lawyer also spoke directly to the protesters, acknowledging their efforts and the validity of their grievances. He commended their bravery and urged them to maintain peace and order during their demonstrations. Adegboruwa suggested that the protests be limited to a shorter duration to allow for constructive dialogue with the government.

The lawyer stressed the importance of continued engagement with government representatives to address and remedy the issues raised by the protesters. He proposed setting up various teams to initiate these crucial dialogues promptly.

In a nation grappling with economic challenges and social unrest, Adegboruwa’s calls for a peaceful, rational approach to advocacy highlight a critical path forward. He concluded his appeals with a blessing for all involved, reflecting his hope for a peaceful resolution and progressive change in Nigeria.
