Nigerian Military Warns Protesters Against Treason

Treason Charges for Flag-Waving Protesters

The Nigerian military has declared that individuals waving Russian flags during protests are committing treason and will face prosecution. This statement was made by General Christopher Musa, Chief of Defence Staff, after a National Security Council meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

Treason Charges for Flag-Waving Protesters

On Monday, General Christopher Musa announced that protesters displaying Russian flags during nationwide demonstrations would be prosecuted for treason. This announcement followed a series of protests sparked by the high cost of living. Notably, demonstrators in Kano State were seen waving Russian flags and chanting in Hausa, “We don’t want bad government.”

The Defense Chief emphasized, “That is unacceptable… that is a treasonable offense, and it will be viewed and treated as such.” He further revealed that the military is investigating those inciting these actions and will take serious measures against them.

The nationwide protests, which began on August 3, 2024, have seen individuals in multiple states, including Kano and Kaduna, waving Russian flags and calling for change. In Kaduna, protesters were heard chanting, “Welcome, Russia; Welcome, Russia,” while brandishing the Russian flag.

The Nigerian government is concerned about the implications of these actions, particularly given Russia’s history of involvement in political upheavals in West Africa. Countries like Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have seen unconstitutional changes in government allegedly influenced by Russia.

General Musa stated, “For those of them flying flags, and if you see a lot of them, they are kids being pushed to do that. We’re following up with those who are sponsoring them. Those are pushing them because, you know, the flyers were also made. We have identified those areas, and we are going to take serious action against them.”

Government’s Stance on Maintaining Peace

President Bola Tinubu has issued clear instructions to the military to maintain peace and order in Nigeria. The government is resolute in its stance against any actions that threaten the nation’s stability. General Musa conveyed the President’s message: “We will not accept anybody, any individual flying any foreign flag in Nigeria… So nobody should allow themselves to be used by any individual.”

The military is committed to ensuring that those behind the distribution and promotion of foreign flags during protests are identified and prosecuted. The Nigerian government is determined to prevent any foreign influence from disrupting the country’s peace and security.
