President Bola Tinubu was in Maiduguri yesterday to sympathize with the flood affected people, especially the over two million residents displaced by the latest flood tragedy that has claimed over 30 lives so far, destroyed properties and farmlands amongst other losses.
Also speaking to the Governor, Shehu of Borno, and some flood affected persons receiving shelter at Government College, Tinubu reassured the troubled region that his administration will try its best to support.
Furthermore, Tinubu expressed his appreciation to Governor Zulum, the Shehu of Borno and all stakeholders involved in the management of the situation and noted that the federal government will reciprocate with the best support commiserate to the incident and extend necessary support for everyone affected by the tragedy.
He also noted that even though the Vice President, Kashim Shettima had previously done his part by paying his condolences on behalf of the President, he deemed it fit to personally do so as well. The governor was visited by Tinubu with spill-over entourage of persons such as the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and governors.
Mohammed Abubakar (Bauchi Governor) N250 million, Sultan of Sokoto wants proactive measures in place this year floods
According to Vanguard, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed who visited Maiduguri said he would provide 250 million naira to support the issue while he feeds over 10, 000 displaced persons.
Mohammed said, “We come here to sympathize with Borno State, and with the people of the state; this is alongside offering the donation and the Bauchi State Emergency Management Agency is feeding more than 10,000 IDPs with meals daily in camps.”
On the other hand, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar IV in his capacity as the Chairman of JNI urged the federal government to embark on the early sensitisation of the areas prone to floods.
“Flood management ideas should not only be in response to disasters and this is why the Sultan has told the communities: Be prepared during the rainy season.” He also urged those in powers to embrace a thorough approach in order to avoid a repeat of such calamities in the future.
