Senate Vows Support for Tinubu’s Disaster Relief Efforts in Borno

Akpabio praises federal government's swift response to borno flooding crisis

President Bola Tinubu has received assurances from Senate President Godswill Akpabio that the Parliament is prepared to mobilize the necessary support to supplement the Federal Government’s efforts in disaster mitigation, prevention, and response. 

Tinubu praised for swift response to Borno flooding disaster

He also praised the Tinubu-led Federal Government for its prompt action in responding to the fatal floods that struck other states and the capital of Borno State, Maiduguri, due to the heavy rains that caused the Alau Dam to overflow. 

During the President’s condolence visit to Borno State and the Shehu of Borno, Abubakar Ibn Umar Garba Al Amin El-Kanemi, in Maiduguri on Monday, Akpabio delivered the praise at Government House.

According to a report by Punch, recall that Tinubu took a detour from his journey to attend the annual UN General Assembly meeting in New York, flew into the nation, and the same day led a strong delegation to Maiduguri to express his condolences to the governments and people of the states affected by the flooding for the regrettable tragedy.

“I see this as an expression of love, empathy, and dedication to the security and well-being of Nigerians,” said Akpabio.

Senate promises support for disaster mitigation and relief efforts

 “On resumption, the National Assembly will mobilize to support the intervention purse and complement the efforts of the Federal Government, State Governments, NNPCL, NEMA, and other interventionist agencies,” Akpabio said, assuring the President of the Assembly’s resolve to work with the Executive.

In addition, Senator Akpabio thanked President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NNPCL, NEMA, the Armed Forces, and other stakeholders for their prompt and forceful responses to the flood disaster and pledged to “add verve to the Special Disaster Intervention Fund when established.”

He promised that the National Assembly is dedicated to assisting all federal and subnational governments in their efforts to restore Nigerians’ faith in themselves.

Most significantly, the President’s declaration that FAAC monies will be used to establish a Special Disaster Intervention Fund to aid in future unanticipated natural disasters shows an unwavering commitment to transformative leadership and good governance. 

He also gave Governor Babagana Zulum praise for his initiative in managing the crisis and seeing to the victims’ needs.
