The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has launched the Electronic Central Motor Registry (E-CMR), a digital platform aimed at revolutionizing vehicle registration and verification across the country.
The initiative, introduced by Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi, seeks to modernize how vehicle information is handled, improving road safety and cutting down on unnecessary stops for document checks.
In a series of social media posts, Adejobi shared details about the E-CMR, which was introduced under the leadership of Inspector-General Olukayode Egbetokun.
Moreover, this new system allows vehicle owners to register their cars online, access vehicle information digitally, and report incidents in real-time, making roads safer and vehicle ownership processes more efficient.
Key benefits of E-CMR
One major benefit of the E-CMR system is the removal of physical paperwork. With this digital platform, officers are now equipped with advanced technology to verify vehicle documents instantly, reducing the need for frequent stops on the road.
Adejobi tweeted, “No more stopping to check papers—our officers are equipped with cutting-edge tech to verify documents in real time.”
Furthermore, another key feature is the ability to flag stolen vehicles through the E-CMR. If a vehicle is stolen, owners can immediately flag it through their online profile, which will alert police officers nationwide within seconds, boosting the chances of a quick recovery.
Modernizing vehicle registration
The introduction of E-CMR is part of the NPF’s efforts to modernize the motor vehicle registration system in Nigeria.
In July 2024, the Inspector-General mandated the digitization of the Central Motor Registry to improve vehicle management, enhance road safety, and streamline vehicle-related services like ownership transfers, license renewals, and engine or chassis updates.
According to Punch, this system is also expected to reduce the number of stolen vehicles sold in the market, as real-time tracking and verification become more efficient.
