KEY POINTS

  • The PDP criticized President Tinubu’s Independence Day speech, calling it a failure to address key national issues.
  • PDP highlighted the ongoing economic struggles and claimed Tinubu’s policies haven’t eased the burden on Nigerians.
  • The opposition urged the administration to focus on policies that prioritize the welfare of the people.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day speech as unproductive and lacking the ability to address the severe problems that the country is facing at the moment.

The party was particularly worried that Tinubu was unable to provide solutions for Nigeria’s ever increasing economic challenges that has impacted millions of people.

As the opposition would have it, Tinubu’s speech failed to reflect the key concerns especial the increasing cost of living as occasioned by inflation and non-removal of subsidies.

The PDP alleged that the actions of the administration have compounded the financial difficulties of Nigerians, who are struggling to feed themselves because of the hike in prices of fuel and other issues associated with the recent economic policies of the government.

Economic crisis and the issue of fuel subsidy removal

The PDP has accused Tinubu of one of the major issues that led to leadership crisis, which is the removal of fuel subsidies. On this score, the party argues that this move has greatly led to the current economic pressure on the population.

In his speech, Tinubu defended his administration’s decision to remove the subsidy saying it was for the betterment of the country’s economy in the long run. However, the PDP dismissed this defense stating that the negative impacts have outcompeted the benefits in the course of the year.

They also noted that Tinubu’s government post-subsidy promised better living standards but instead, fuel prices have been hiked; inflation has skyrocketed; and citizens’ purchasing power has been lowered. The PDP’s view is that the administration should pay more attention to the plight of the population before any benefits are accrued in the future.

The voices that have been raised to demand action on economic reforms.

Apart from the question of subsidies, the PDP has urged Tinubu’s government to introduce more effective and people-oriented economic measures. They say what the nation requires at the moment are policies that seek to address poverty, create employment and bring back the middle income earners.

The opposition party also raised issues with Tinubu’s planned approach to the economy including the removal of trade barriers and support of locally-owned enterprises as half-baked since he failed to give details on how he intended to execute them. They called for further elaboration of the reforms that could be implemented to produce an effect on the spot.

As reported by Tribune Online, the PDP statement called on Tinubu to pay more attention to the voices of the people and address issues that affect the people in the shortest time possible rather than policies that will take years to yield result.

Hope for a brighter future

However, the PDP has not given up on the possibility of Nigeria coming out of the current challenges. They urged the government to review some of the existing policies and implement some policies that would help those in need in the society in the shortest time possible.

The party is convinced that with the right reforms and the right approach the country is still capable of moving forward, of coming together and of creating a better future for all the people of Nigeria.
