Stakeholders gathered in Abuja for the eighth Voice of Women Conference and Awards have called for actionable strategies to enhance women’s representation in leadership roles across Nigeria.

Themed “Achieving Women’s Inclusion for a Sustainable Nigeria,” the conference emphasized women’s vital role in sustainable development.

Boosting women’s inclusion in leadership

Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, chairman of the event’s planning committee, highlighted the need for inclusive governance during her address.

She underscored the significance of providing platforms for meaningful dialogue, which could create support systems for grassroots women, who are often the backbone of communities.

Akiyode-Afolabi stated that empowering women in leadership roles is crucial for achieving national development and sustainability.

She emphasized, “The importance of amplifying women’s voices cannot be overstated. Together, we have the power to reshape policies and create opportunities for all women.”

Toun Sonaiya, CEO of Women Radio 91.7 FM, urged President Bola Tinubu to support the 74 extra seats bill being deliberated by the 10th National Assembly.

She pointed out the importance of using political will to advance women’s inclusion to global standards. Sonaiya also highlighted the NELFUND loan initiative, urging mothers and guardians to encourage young women to take advantage of the funding for higher education.

UN representative advocates women empowerment

Speaking on behalf of Beatrice Eyong, UN Country Representative to Nigeria, Patience Ekeoba highlighted that women’s empowerment is not just a matter of equality but a foundation for sustainable development.

She stressed that women, particularly those at the grassroots level, have the unique ability to shape lives, transform culture, and establish inclusive governance systems.

“Women have been underrepresented in leadership roles for far too long—not due to a lack of competence but due to structural barriers limiting their access and opportunities,” Eyong emphasized.

According to Punch, she added that rural women have demonstrated resilience and creativity, despite limited resources. Empowering these women would uplift entire communities.

The Minister of State for Labor and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, also highlighted the critical role of rural women in fostering societal change.

She stressed the need for policies such as the 35 percent affirmative action to support the empowerment of rural women, who are integral to achieving inclusivity.

Women’s voices in politics

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central noted the resilience of Nigerian women, particularly those from rural backgrounds and the civil service.

She categorized women into married women, civil servants, and entrepreneurs, highlighting the distinct challenges faced by each group.

Akpoti-Uduaghan urged aspiring female politicians to genuinely address the concerns of women and ensure they prioritize constituents’ needs.

“For women vying for political office, you need to sell a relatable idea to Nigerian women, especially those who are married, and assure them that their well-being will be a priority,” she said.

She reiterated that empowering women is essential for societal progress and that women in politics must be dedicated to driving real change.
