KEY POINTS

  • The first 47 km of the Lagos-Calabar Highway is expected to be completed by May 2025.
  • Hitech Construction Company — Umahi Minister upbeat on company’s construction efforts.
  • The construction was affected by the refusal of dumpsite removal but the latter will not hinder the successful development of a project.

The federal government, through the Hon. Minister of Works and Housing, informed Nigerian citizens about the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. The project spans 47 kilometers and is set to be completed by May 2025.

The Honourable Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, assured this during the recent inspection of the site.
Earlier, the project stalled because they needed to clear a portion of the bridge used as a dumpsite.

Umahi expressed confidence in contractor Hitech, saying they can produce one kilometer of concrete pavement per day. Although setbacks occurred due to large dumpsites along the highway corridor, Umahi insists the completion date remains realistic.

Achievements and setbacks in Lagos-Calabar highway project

Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, claimed refuse evacuation had slowed construction processes significantly.

At some sections, they had to clear and fill areas with five to six meters of waste, slowing work. In response, Kesha stated these issues wouldn’t delay the project’s progress in any significant way.

Minister Umahi warned occupiers along the highway corridor to leave the area or risk displacement, causing additional delays.

However, according to The Punch, Umahi said the project remains on schedule for completion by May 2025.
He also praised the quality of work done by Hitech.
