KEY POINTS

  • With over 2 million candidates it conducts entrance exams with ICT yearly.
  • In his speech Registrar Oloyede then compares Nigeria’s ICT usage in exams to the US, UK and India.
  • JAMB’s registration, examination and admissions processes both utilize automation and AI.

Speaking at the JAMB Innovation Hub’s launch, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede described the organisation as the largest user of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) globally.

According to Oloyede, who spoke at the 2024 International Week and 17th Annual Research Conference organised by the University of Lagos, JAMB is leading in comparison to other countries.

JAMB had conducted entrance exams for over 2 million candidates yearly which attested that JAMB carried out ‘massive’ scale in the conduct of entrance exams of over 2 million candidates yearly, which cannot be matched by any other country, including the U.S., U.K., and India.

Unique to JAMB is its unparalleled ICT driven exam process

JAMB has digitised both the matrix and examination processes and has remained fair and transparent, according to Oloyede.

‘To register candidates, we use ICT and we have protective as well as detective measures to guard against fraud,’ he said.

JAMB’s adoption of computer based testing (CBT), to the level of over 2 million candidates on an unprecedented scale shows our commitment to the use of ICTs.

JAMB’s operations in automation and AI

Apart from exams, JAMB has previously automated its admissions process using the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) where all candidates are treated equally. “Admissions will not be mistreated or unfairly considered, because it is automation,” Oloyede said.

However, Oloyede speaking on the increased role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) urged caution, having found inaccuracies from content generated by it.

According to Vanguard, “We have to depend on artificial intelligence with natural intelligence because we cannot help but use it,” he said.
