KEY POINTS
- NEMA assessed flood impacts in Anambra, including multiple affected LGAs, and in Bayelsa.
- Efforts are underway in collaboration to meet displaced residents, damaged homes and farmland losses.
- The NEMA also promises to continue coordinated response and support for the flood hit communities
As part of NEMA’s ongoing flood preparedness, response and recovery initiatives for the year 2024, the agency has finished assessments of flood impacts in Anambra and Bayelsa states.
NEMA is working together with the Nigerian Red Cross Society and the International Organisation for Migration to collaborate with State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) in order to evaluate how badly the action has affected the homes, the farmlands and the local infrastructure.
Flood assessments in flood affected communities
Flooding came as a result of high water level of River Niger in flood prone communities of Anambra State. This led to residents of over 600 homes displaced recently.
Furthermore, with a view to assessing household and resource impacts on impacted Local Government Areas (LGAs), NEMA focused on eight affected LGAs, among these are Anambra East, Anambra West and Ogbaru. Chief Paul Odenigbo, Executive Secretary, Anambra SEMA, commends NEMA’s prompt response to the crisis.
Intensified flooding caused by consistent heavy rainfall in Bayelsa State has also affected the daily life of 54 communities in seven Local Government Areas.
Dr. Dio Wenapere from Bayelsa SEMA, and from NEMA personal assessment of the location conducted assessment of Sagbama, Kaiama, and Igbogene.
Coordination for disaster response
Eulogizing the outstanding initiative of NEMA, the agency’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, said that the agency remains committed to harmonizing data with state partners to provide effective and timely support.
She told the public that NEMA is committed to disaster preparedness and will continue to work with SEMAs and other stakeholders to ensure adequate relief to affected communities.
