In their recent statement the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) claimed that the country had witnessed a rise in the number of irregular migrants.
Delivering the 2024 NIS enlightenment campaign against irregular migration in Benin City, Edo State, the State Controller of Immigration, Martins Moy, said that the rate was worrying.
Altruistic crusade to combat informal migration
The campaign is themed “Say No to Migrant Smuggling; No to Unsafe Migration”. The quizzes “If You Must Migrate, Migrate Safely, Orderly, and Regularly,” took three days and reached market places, automobile terminals and the palace of the Enogie of Eyaen.
Moye stated the need for the sensitization saying that irregular migration jeopardizes the lives of persons as well as the security of the nation.

The Assistant Controller of Immigration, David Amanau, praised the effort of Edo State to enhance its dealing with past records of irregular migration.
“It is clear that Edo State is no longer the leading state for irregular migration; however, efforts must increase to maintain this achievement,” he explained.
