Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has urged Finland to extradite Simon Ekpa, a Nigerian-Finnish dual national, following his arrest in Finland on Thursday.

Ekpa, a prominent separatist leader, is accused by Finnish authorities of engaging in terrorism-related activities, including inciting violence and financing terrorism.

Terrorism financing and incitement

Ekpa,, alongside four others, was arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences. Finnish law enforcement confirmed that the individuals, including Ekpa, are believed to have financially supported terrorist actions.

Finland’s Central Criminal Police released a statement describing the ongoing investigation, revealing that the suspects are suspected of inciting crimes with terrorist intent.

Detective Chief Inspector Otto Hiltunen, who is leading the inquiry, stated that Ekpa allegedly used social media to orchestrate violent campaigns targeting both civilians and government authorities in Nigeria’s South-East region.

Controversial activist arrested in Finland

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Media Operations, voiced General Musa’s approval of the arrest, expressing hope that it would be a step toward securing Ekpa’s extradition to Nigeria. “The CDS is pleased with the arrest and looks forward to his extradition, ensuring he faces justice,” Gusau remarked.

Ekpa has long been a controversial figure, gaining notoriety for his separatist rhetoric and actions. In 2023, he faced temporary detention in Nigeria on charges of fundraising fraud.

He has also repeatedly used inflammatory language to advocate for the secession of the Biafran region and disrupt national elections, as seen in a widely circulated 2023 video where he declared that elections would not be allowed in the region.

International collaboration nuderlines the case

According to Punch, the ongoing case highlights the importance of international cooperation in tackling global terrorism. Finnish authorities have emphasized the significance of their collaboration with Nigerian counterparts in advancing the investigation.

Court hearings for Ekpa and the other detainees are set for Thursday, as the case continues to unfold in both Finnish and international courts.
