KEY POINTS

  • Speaker Obasa says he is qualified to run for Lagos governor.
  • His primary focus is advancing APC’s agenda through the Mandate Group.
  • Becoming governor, he insists, is secondary to his current priorities.

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has declared that he is qualified to run for the governorship of Lagos State. However, he clarified that contesting for governor is not currently a priority. Obasa made this statement following Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s presentation of a ₦3 trillion budget proposal for the 2025 fiscal year.

Obasa addressed speculation about his ambitions, stating, “Becoming governor is secondary; it is something that I have not given serious consideration. However, that does not mean I am too young or lack experience to run.”

Obasa emphasized his commitment to strengthening the All Progressives Congress (APC) through the Mandate Group. He urged party members to focus on mobilizing for the 2027 elections and underscored the importance of unity within the APC. “Our intention is to promote our party on the platform of Mandate,” he said, encouraging others to build and sustain the party.

Obasa addresses blackmail and clarifies political ambitions

Obasa dismissed rumors suggesting he is actively pursuing the governorship, labeling them as blackmail aimed at distorting his mission. He reiterated that his current focus is on supporting the APC’s broader goals. “To the blackmailers who have embarked on the mission to distort and redefine our mission, let me state it unequivocally, our intention is to promote our party,” he said.

This clarification comes amid reports suggesting that Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, may contest for the Lagos governorship in 2027. Obasa’s statement highlights his dedication to the APC’s growth over personal political ambitions.
