KEY POINTS
- Ekpa’s arrest is a good thing but it’s not a panacea for insecurity.
- Federal government should release Nnamdi Kanu, Southeast leaders urge.
- A demand for dialogue and regional security summits is what residents want for lasting peace.
There was relief across Nigeria’s Southeast region as Simon Ekpa, leader of the Autopilot group, was arrested.
Ekpa, who exaggerated social media posts, unlawful sit at home orders and fomenting violence, is accused of international terrorism.
Resident of Ebonyi, Imo and Abia States lauded his arrest from the Finland authorities as it would further diminish insecurity.
While the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) might have influenced Ekpa’s actions.
Ebonyi resident Nwaliose Egbu said: “We want peace, but only if Kanu is freed can peace reign forever.” ‘Ekpa’s arrest alone will not end the insecurity’ unless stakeholders address the deeper issues’.
Calls for Kanu’s Release Continue to Intensify
There are, however, religious leaders, youth groups and community stakeholders insisting that the federal government must release Kanu, whom they blame for heightened tensions in the region.
We can all agree now that his detention despite court order has fueled the crisis, Arch bishop Onuagha of the Methodist Church stated. It’s important for peace”.
Also, the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) said that Kanu is a central figure required for the resolution of the Southeast’s challenges.
COSEYL President Goodluck Ibem however said, Governors must come together and free Kanu for peace, to restore peace and revamp the failing economy.
