Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has announced plans to open a state-of-the-art clinic dedicated to the treatment and prevention of sickle cell disease.
Located at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, the clinic will provide free comprehensive care for patients, including diagnosis, consultations, medications, and surgeries.
The announcement was made during the inauguration of the state’s second maternal and neonatal week for 2024 in Kumbotso Local Government Area.
Dr. Abubakar Labaran, Kano’s Commissioner for Health, highlighted that the clinic aligns with Governor Yusuf’s healthcare reform agenda.
Tackling sickle cell disease through prevention
The governor has already signed a premarital health screening bill into law.
This legislation prohibits marriages between individuals with similar genotypes, aiming to prevent the birth of children with sickle cell anemia.
“This initiative addresses the root cause of the disease while ensuring that those living with it receive the care and support they need,” said Sanusi Bature, the governor’s spokesman.
According to Punch, Bature emphasized that the premarital health screening law reflects the administration’s proactive approach to tackling sickle cell disease in the state.
A commitment to comprehensive healthcare
Governor Yusuf’s healthcare blueprint also prioritizes providing relief for those affected by sickle cell disease.
“This special care center demonstrates the administration’s determination to promote a healthier future for Kano’s residents,” Bature added.
The clinic underscores Yusuf’s dedication to transforming healthcare in Kano State and providing hope to families affected by sickle cell disease.
By combining prevention strategies with free, accessible care, the initiative aims to significantly reduce the burden of sickle cell anemia in the region.
