  • Tariff changes will follow due process with stakeholder input.
  • Consumers should rely on official channels for accurate updates.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has firmly dismissed rumors suggesting an increase in telecommunications tariffs starting in January 2025.

The regulatory body labeled these claims as baseless and assured subscribers that no such decision had been made.

NCC denies tariff hike rumors

Responding to widespread speculation, a senior NCC official emphasized that the Commission operates transparently under the Nigerian Communications Act, requiring thorough consultations with stakeholders before approving any tariff adjustments.

“These rumors are misleading. The NCC is dedicated to protecting consumers and ensuring that any potential tariff changes are communicated clearly and transparently,” the official said. Subscribers were urged to disregard the misinformation.

According to Punch, the NCC also highlighted the need for journalists and industry stakeholders to verify information before publishing reports, to prevent unnecessary public panic.

Subscriber group reassures on consumer protection

The Association of Telephone, Cable TV, and Internet Subscribers of Nigeria (ATCIS) joined the NCC in debunking the rumors.  However, ATCIS National President, Sina Bilesanmi, disclosed that the group sought clarification from the NCC on December 24, 2024.

“The NCC confirmed there is no truth to claims of call charges increasing to N15.40 per minute, SMS charges rising to N5.60, or 1GB of data costing N1,400 instead of N1,000,” Bilesanmi said.

Moreover, he also noted that any potential tariff changes would follow due process, including consultations with stakeholders such as ATCIS, ensuring transparency and consumer protection.

NCC emphasizes consumer rights

Reiterating its commitment to consumer interests, the NCC assured Nigerians that updates regarding tariffs would always be communicated through official channels.

Additionally, the Commission urged subscribers to rely only on credible sources for accurate information.

“We remain committed to stabilizing the telecommunications industry while safeguarding consumer rights,” the NCC stated.

The Commission encouraged Nigerians to stay informed through verified channels and reiterated its promise to maintain affordability and accessibility in the telecommunications sector.
