Kano APC Faces Crisis as Minister Opposes Party Leadership

KEY POINTS

  • APC state chairman Abdullahi Abbas faces rejection from Minister Yusuf Atta as Ganduje tries to restore his position as party leader.
  • Atta vows he will depart from APC completely if Abdullahi Abbas continues as its state chairman.
  • The minister suggests divine forces caused APC’s loss in 2023 as he warns about destructive power conflicts.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chapter in Kano State experiences internal conflict because Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development Yusuf Atta strongly believes the party should not have Abdullahi Abbas as its leader.

Yusuf Atta has openly refused to recognize Abdullahi Abbas as Kano State party chairperson under APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje which led to his threat of party departure if the current appointee continues his official term.

Leadership dispute and threats of defection

At the upcoming Fagge APC Caucus meeting Atta voiced his belief that keeping Abbas as state party chairman will make it impossible for APC to win Kano from the NNPP.

According to Maigaskiyau Atta the state chief conducted an illegal power move by pushing Abbas into another term despite Abbas serving the state since ten years.

Many party members including Atta would abandon the party if Abbas regains his position. The party members will depart if Administrators choose to reinstall Abbas as state chairman.

According to his assessment the party would inevitably end up with another defeat if Abbas continues as the party leader. Leadership should operate on foundation of values and integrity while staying free from conflicts based on power control and unfairness.

APC’s 2023 election loss and allegations of divine retribution

According to Atta he believes the APC defeat in the 2023 Kano governorship election stemmed from both electoral manipulation and spiritual intervention by God. Nasiru Gawuna and Murtala Garo would have secured victory during the election but God intervened because the party defied divine authority.

According to him leadership cannot be obtained through voting power or monetary influence since divine will determines who holds power.

APC in Kano must now make a critical decision given the increasing tensions within the state. A leadership crisis that persists will create party splits that would reduce APC’s voting strength in forthcoming elections.
