Ghanaian Police Clear Up False Arrest Reports of Tycoon Benedict Peters

KEY POINTS

  • Ghanaian police deny viral reports of Benedict Peters’ arrest, stating that the incident was simply a routine traffic clearance operation.

  • The dispute stemmed from Peters’ denied access to a private lift in his residential building, prompting a peaceful protest in which he temporarily parked vehicles.

  • Peters thanked the Ghanaian police for their professional handling of the situation and remains hopeful that the lift access issue will be resolved amicably.

A recent viral report claiming the arrest of Benedict Peters, the influential founder of Aiteo Group and a renowned pan-African businessman, has been thoroughly denied by Ghanaian police authorities.

The allegations stemmed from a brief incident earlier this week in Accra, which involved a dispute at an upscale residential building.

According to a police source, the rumors about Peters being detained were misleading and completely unfounded. “At no point was Mr. Peters arrested or detained. The situation involved a routine traffic clearance operation related to a temporary obstruction, not an arrest,” the police spokesperson confirmed.

The Vanguard reports that the incident occurred at Peters’ apartment complex, where he has been embroiled in an ongoing dispute with the developers of the building. The core of the disagreement centers around his access to a private lift that connects directly to his residence. Despite his entitlement, he has repeatedly been denied access to the lift, sparking frustration.

A peaceful stand

In response to the situation, Peters took to the property to stage a peaceful protest, expressing his dissatisfaction with the developers. On the day of the incident, he temporarily parked four of his vehicles along the internal road of the complex, blocking the route for around two to three hours.

The protest was non-violent, and Peters was reportedly accompanied only by his private, unarmed security personnel. “I just want to draw attention to the issue and have the matter resolved amicably. I did not intend to escalate the situation in any way,” Peters later explained in a statement.

Social media reports had wildly exaggerated the events, claiming that Peters had mobilized a convoy of 20 armed vehicles and over 100 guards, allegedly creating a major blockade. However, these claims were quickly debunked by both eyewitnesses and the police. “There was no road blockade or major security mobilization,” an eyewitness stated. “The officers were simply performing their duty to clear the temporary obstruction. It was a peaceful and controlled situation from start to finish.”

To address the confusion, national security operatives were summoned by the property developers to the scene. Sources indicated that Peters fully cooperated with the officers, who arrived at the site to ensure smooth traffic flow and resolve any disruptions caused by the parked vehicles.

A senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, further clarified the situation. “The officers were there to ensure the road was cleared swiftly to avoid further disruptions, and no arrests took place,” he said.
