President Bola Tinubu showed profound sadness for Pope Francis’s death as various Catholic and Christian communities across the world mourned the influential pontiff’s passing.

Through his statement President Tinubu praised Pope Francis as “a humble servant of God” who tirelessly advocated for the poor while demonstrating enduring compassion in peace-building and his work for justice.

The Head of State noted that Pope Francis’ death took place shortly after the Easter season so he returned to his Creator in a sacred manner. The President demanded both Nigerian citizens and citizens of the world to memorialize Pope Francis by practicing mercy and unity while working toward justice.

Legacy of mercy and justice

President Tinubu praised the remarkable achievements of Pope Francis during his papacy that started in 2013. Pope Francis emphasized mercy in his appeals to observe the face of Christ present within refugees as well as migrants and those neglected by society.

The Pope established his leadership through three essential components: his endorsement of justice and peace advocacy and his invitation for welcoming strangers and his active defense of Earth as a legacy for the future.
