The Ilesha Baruba community located in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State experienced a fatal attack initiated by gunmen who carried out their operations while wearing military-styled uniforms on the night of Monday.

Such attackers reached the town through the Ilorin road at 9:30 p.m. before spreading bullets randomly across the relaxation site near the Ilesha Baruba Motor Park. The attack led to two wounded victims and six pronounced yet.

The victims comprising two Baruba men together with four Fulani men have become mourned by their community. According to local reports the soldiers seemed responsible for the fatal assault which caused extensive panic among community members. “This is heartbreaking. We don’t feel safe anymore. They looked like soldiers. Residents suggested that the attack becomes more alarming because the assailants had the characteristics of soldiers,” a local resident expressed.

Vigilante killed in clash with suspected bandits

The same day Vladimir Samba served as a regular member of the vigilante patrol force when he was killed around Kemanji in Kaiama Local Government Area. When Samba’s patrol team met suspected bandits they began a gunfight. Three opponents received fatal injuries as reported when the confrontation started.

According to the Kwara State Police Command their press statement indicated that investigations into the incident had started. A suspected informer who police captured for their suspected connection to the bandit problem now works closely with law enforcement on their investigations.

Investigation into the Gunmen who committed this crime and security measures

CSP Toun Ejire from the Kwara State Police Command announced to the media how they had received information about Ilesha Baruba attack through the first call at 11:30 p.m. The official confirmed that unidentified gunmen had killed six individuals as well as wounded two more people during their attacks. The deceased individuals have been taken for autopsy examinations in the Ilesha Baruba Morgue and medical care is provided to the injured patients.

The police caught a confidential agent who confirmed to authorities his involvement with bandits after the Kemanji incident. Investigations are ongoing.

Increased security measures and calls for government action

DSP Ejire declared the entire security plan includes the deployment of tactical teams combined with increased observation and operational guidance to bring back peace. The law will fully hold accountable any individual who enables criminal activities throughout the state’s territory according to the officer.

Residents together with community leaders have pressed the government to dispatch more security forces quickly into these disturbed zones for the purpose of stopping new outbreaks of violence.
