  • INEC readiness for Kogi by-election confirmed for Saturday.

  • Security agencies on high alert to prevent election disruptions.

  • Political parties intensify campaigns ahead of weekend polls.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria says it is ready for the Kogi State by-election on Saturday and assures voters that all preparations have been made to guarantee a credible and seamless process.

A number of political parties have expressed interest in the election, which will fill a vacancy in the legislature, in an attempt to gauge their strength before more general elections.

Security agencies have already been briefed on deployment plans, according to INEC officials, and ballots, result sheets, and other sensitive materials will arrive at polling stations on time.

Details of INEC’s preparedness for the Kogi by-election

Hale Gabriel Longpet, INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner for Kogi, told reporters in Lokoja that all non-sensitive materials had been sent to local government districts. He added that ad hoc staff had finished their training earlier in the week.

“We pledge to hold an election that is free, fair, and credible,” Longpet stated. “To guarantee that voters can exercise their rights without fear, we have worked closely with security agencies.”

Security organizations vigilant about potential disturbances

Due to violence in some constituencies during past elections, the Kogi by-election takes place during a period of increased political tension in some regions of the nation.

According to a report by Vanguard news, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the police, and other organizations have promised to adequately protect election materials, voters, and officials.

Intelligence teams will keep an eye out for possible flashpoints, and security patrols will be positioned at key locations. A senior Kogi police officer told reporters, “We prioritize prevention over reaction.” “We want to make sure there aren’t any problems before, during, or after the elections.”

As the election day draws closer, political parties mobilize

In the final days before voting, a number of parties have stepped up their campaigns, using social media outreach, door-to-door canvassing, and rallies to mobilize supporters.

According to analysts, the by-election will be used as a gauge of public opinion before the general election cycle in 2027.

Political leaders have been urged by INEC to warn their followers against violence and voter intimidation, emphasizing that violations of the Electoral Act will have legal repercussions. “The conduct of all stakeholders, not just INEC, is what determines the credibility of our elections,” Longpet stated.

Reminding eligible voters that polling will open at 8:30 a.m. and close at 2:30 p.m., the commission encouraged them to turn out in large numbers. Those who are still in line at closing time are still permitted to cast their ballots.
