  • Taraba foreign trip claim strongly dismissed as entirely false allegation.

  • Critics loudly demand clear proof of financial accountability and transparency.

  • Government firmly insists public funds remain focused on essential development.

The Taraba State government has denied online rumors that it spent N5.22 billion on a trip abroad, claiming the reports are untrue, deceptive, and politically driven.

In a statement released over the weekend, state officials claimed that the amount linked to a purported foreign trip was not only erroneous but also intended to mislead the public.

According to a report by the Punch news, the government insisted that fiscal responsibility is still at the heart of its policies and emphasized that no such expenditure had been authorized or implemented.

Taraba disputes spending N5.22 billion on overseas travel

The government claims that the claim was based on misrepresented and out-of-context documents.

A senior aide to Governor Agbu Kefas stated, “This administration is focused on projects that improve livelihoods, not frivolous spending.” The aide went on to say that the governor and his delegation’s official travels were all completely within budgetary constraints and far less than the purported N5.22 billion.

The reports have caused confusion among residents of the state capital, Jalingo. Some claim that the numbers are unrealistic in light of the state’s financial situation, while others maintain their skepticism by pointing to past administrations’ lack of transparency.

Despite denial, opposition questions still exist

Critics, however, have not been quieted by the denial. In order to rebuild public confidence, opposition organizations have called for increased transparency, claiming that the government should make official travel expense records available.

Civil society organizations also joined the call, stating that in order to keep rumors from spreading, there needs to be more clarity in communication.

One activist in Jalingo stated, “The government needs to move past denial.” “Tarabans require proof of the management of public funds.”

The claim of Taraba’s foreign trip is perceived as a distraction

The dispute, according to many analysts, highlights the escalating hostility between the government and its detractors in the run-up to local elections. Some people think that rather than representing actual spending, the N5.22 billion figure is being used as a political tool.

Nevertheless, the government maintains that providing social welfare and infrastructure throughout the state is its top priority. Recent road construction and educational programs were cited by officials as examples of how money is being used for development.

It’s unclear if the denial will allay public skepticism. For the time being, the purported N5.22 billion foreign trip still dominates Taraba political discourse, casting a shadow over other problems facing the state, such as unemployment and insecurity.
