A former Governor of Oyo State, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has officially assumed the throne as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The coronation took place at the Ose Meji Temple in Ibadan South-East Local Government Area, after Ladoja earlier received the symbolic Akoko leaf at the Labosinde Compound, Oja’ba.
Governor Seyi Makinde will formally present him with the staff and instrument of office at Mapo Hall, Ibadan’s most historic civic venue.
Governor returns early for coronation
Makinde cut short his annual leave on Thursday to personally witness the ceremony, underscoring the importance of the occasion for the people of Oyo State and beyond.
Transition after Olakulehin’s passing
Ladoja emerged as Olubadan-designate following the death of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan, who passed on July 7, 2025. The succession follows Ibadan’s long-standing traditional system, which is known for its orderly ascension.
Political leader turned monarch
Born in 1944, Ladoja served as Governor of Oyo State between 2003 and 2007 before returning to private business and elder statesmanship. His elevation to the Olubadan throne marks a unique convergence of political and traditional leadership in Nigeria’s Southwest.
