The African Democratic Congress criticized President Bola Tinubu’s Independence Day speech, accusing him of turning a historic moment into a performance review of his administration.
Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC’s spokesperson, said Tinubu’s broadcast failed to capture the historical significance of Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary, instead dwelling on reforms and milestones claimed by his government.
ADC says Tinubu missed the moment
Abdullahi argued the president’s remarks sounded more like a budget speech than a national address. He said Nigerians expected a reflection on history and a vision for the future, not what he described as “propaganda” about reforms.
Opposition disputes economic claims
The ADC chieftain said Tinubu’s independence ay speech references to economic progress do not reflect the daily struggles of Nigerians, who face inflation, rising living costs, and insecurity. He noted the president mentioned insecurity only in passing despite its impact on ordinary lives.
Tinubu accused of partisan tone
According to Abdullahi, the president spoke more as a party leader than as a statesman, missing an opportunity to unite Nigerians on a symbolic day. “The speech failed to speak to our past and inspire our future,” he further said.
