Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has declared Tuesday, October 7, a school-free day to celebrate and honour teachers across the state.

The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, announced the governor’s approval in a statement issued Monday in Awka, saying the decision followed this year’s World Teachers’ Day falling on a Sunday.

School-free day to honour teachers’ dedication

Chuma-Udeh said the event would hold at Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, at 8 a.m. and would feature participation from teachers, parents, and private school proprietors.

Furthermore, she noted that the Solution Parents League and the Association of Private School Owners would jointly stage a mega endorsement march in appreciation of Soludo’s reforms in the education sector.

“All teachers, parents, and also proprietors are expected to assemble to give honour to whom honour is due,” she said.

Teachers renew calls for improved welfare

Across Nigeria, teachers marked the 2025 World Teachers’ Day on Sunday with renewed demands for better welfare and improved working conditions.

Unions and education stakeholders also decried slow implementation of the 65-year retirement age policy, poor remuneration, and inadequate facilities. They urged both federal and state governments to fulfil promises made to uplift the education sector.
