The 6 Division Nigerian Army Headquarters in Port Harcourt has commissioned a solar-powered remodelled roundabout and a renovated barracks block at the 29 Battalion as part of ongoing efforts to improve soldiers’ living conditions and operational readiness.

Major General Emmanuel Eric Emekah, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), said the projects reflect the division’s commitment to safety, orderliness, and sustainability across military formations.

Furthermore, he noted that the remodelled roundabout and upgraded accommodation align with the Chief of Army Staff’s “Soldiers First” mantra, which prioritises troop welfare and morale.

Solar-powered project promotes safety and sustainability

The solar-powered roundabout, according to Emekah, provides brighter illumination, improved road markings, and clearer directional signage to enhance movement safety, particularly during low-visibility periods.

He also described the project as a symbol of discipline, innovation, and professionalism within the division.

He also added that environmental cleanliness and infrastructure maintenance remain central to the division’s long-term development goals, aimed at creating a more efficient and sustainable working environment for personnel.

The renovated barracks show the “Soldiers First” concept

The troops who live in the refurbished barracks block have a more comfortable and long-lasting place to live, which greatly improves their morale and performance.  Major General Emekah said the division plans to continue renovations on a rolling basis, with at least one block refurbished monthly or bi-monthly.

“The army has done its part,” he said. “Now, the soldiers must ensure the facilities are well maintained. Moreover this initiative is for their comfort and reflects our collective responsibility.”
