Obidient Movement Director Resigns Over Coordination Failures

KEY POINTS

  • The Monye resignation crisis exposes weak coordination.
  • Monye claims he personally financed mobilisation.
  • The movement faces credibility pressure after Anambra.

Morris Monye has stepped down as Director of Mobilisation of the Obidient Movement. His exit follows deep frustration over structural failures and the group’s poor showing in the recent Anambra governorship election. He announced the decision on Thursday in a statement shared on X, saying his position had become unsustainable.

Monye said the movement lacked coordination, funding, and strategic direction. He added that most of the plans he championed over the past year never materialised, a gap he linked to weak internal systems and limited leadership engagement.

Movement struggles and Monye resignation crisis

Monye said the movement’s weak organisation made daily work difficult. He noted that the Anambra defeat exposed deeper issues. Monye said he funded outreach trips, voter drives, and logistics without support from the leadership or its presidential candidate Peter Obi. He said no funds were ever released for mobilisation.

Monye said the directorate lacked even a bank account. He claimed there was no consistent communication from Obi, which left the team without clear guidance.

Monye said the role exposed him to harassment from government supporters. He said the pressure affected his businesses and strained his family life. Still, he listed key achievements, including building an online registration portal, reviving dormant support groups, and creating regional networks. He also launched the Obidient NextGen campus model.

Monye said he raised funds for the Anambra candidate and began a plan to provide polling agents with low-cost body cameras. He urged his successor to complete the accountability project. Monye said he sent his resignation to Obi and senior coordinators. He said he will focus on his businesses and hopes to pursue executive studies at Oxford or Cambridge. Still, he said he remains committed to advocacy for governance reform.

Monye urged Obi to hire professionals, fund directorates, and adopt a performance-driven system. He warned that goodwill alone cannot sustain the movement. He called his service a privilege but said it was time for new leadership.
