  • State and federal governments share responsibility for Nigeria insecurity.

Former Abia State Governor and Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has alleged that political figures are intentionally exacerbating Nigeria’s existing security issues to weaken President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the nation approaches the 2027 elections.

Nigeria insecurity driven by politics

During an appearance on Channels Television’s *Politics Sunday*, presented by Seun Okinbaloye, Kalu refuted assertions that Tinubu is complacent. The former governor asserted that the president is thoroughly involved, receiving top-tier intelligence briefings while endeavoring to stabilize the nation.

“Insecurity is politically motivated…” Kalu stated, “There are individuals who desire Tinubu’s failure,” characterizing the recent assaults and abductions throughout Nigeria as schemes intended to undermine the government. “Individuals are funding this insecurity to undermine the government.” They desire Tinubu’s failure. They executed the same action against former President Jonathan. “It pertains entirely to 2027,” he remarked. He observed that Tinubu’s choice to annul all commitments on Sunday emphasized the gravity with which he is confronting the situation.

Kalu provided assurance that security forces will retrieve pupils lately kidnapped from schools. The kidnapped girls and other pupils will be rescued. Our security personnel and service leaders are now fully operational. “We will pursue these bandits,” he stated. He underscored that security was a collective obligation of both federal and state governments and warned governors against attributing fault to the central authority.

Tackling Nigeria insecurity effectively

Kalu, reflecting on his experience as governor of Abia, stated that he addressed comparable difficulties by founding the Bakassi security force. If the majority of these states wish to proclaim a state of emergency and assign me to that location for six months, I will maintain tranquility. “I am aware of the appropriate course of action,” he stated. He refrained from identifying persons purportedly instigating insecurity, emphasizing that the intelligence community is now conducting an investigation.

According to The Guardian, Kalu stated that the establishment of state police necessitates constitutional revisions. “The establishment of state police requires the approval of two-thirds of the state houses of assembly.” In the 9th Senate, our efforts were unsuccessful. One cannot attribute fault to the National Assembly,” he stated.

Kalu also discussed the situation of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, contending that political engagement is essential to settle the conflict, whatever the repercussions of Kanu’s actions. “If you provoke individuals to commit murder, you shall be subjected to legal proceedings.” Kanu’s rhetoric incited individuals, resulting in fatalities. “This issue must be addressed through political means,” he stated, referencing ongoing negotiations with the federal administration, including the Attorney-General and the president.
