President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured leaders and residents of the Niger Delta of accelerated development, urging them to look beyond decades of neglect and work constructively with his administration to unlock the region’s potential.
Tinubu gave the assurance while hosting leaders of the Ogbia Kingdom in Bayelsa State at the State House in Abuja. He acknowledged the historical marginalisation of the oil-producing region but cautioned that dwelling on past failures would not deliver progress.
“We cannot excuse the neglect of the past, but living in the past will do us no good,” the President said, stressing that collaboration, resolve and measurable outcomes must now define the region’s relationship with the Federal Government.
Tinubu Niger Delta development pledge takes shape
The President said his administration will deliver lasting development in the Niger Delta while confronting terrorism and other security threats across the country. He described the region as “the goose that lays the golden egg” and admitted that successive governments had failed to adequately cater for its needs.
Tinubu said his government would work closely with Niger Delta indigenes holding key positions, particularly the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Samuel Ogbuku, to deepen development efforts. He praised Ogbuku as a focused and transformative leader whose work has helped refocus attention on the region’s priorities.
Infrastructure projects across the Niger Delta, including roads, street lighting and community-level interventions, will be sustained, Tinubu said. He cited ongoing programmes such as solar lighting, noting that extended business hours have improved livelihoods in communities that once shut down economic activity early in the evening.
Tinubu Niger Delta development pledge extends to security
Tinubu said the national economy, which he described as fragile when his administration took office, has “turned the corner for good,” with the priority now being to ensure ordinary Nigerians feel the impact of reforms.
Responding to requests from the Ogbia delegation, he pledged action on erosion control, bridge construction and other infrastructure critical to economic growth. He also expressed support for educational and historical initiatives, including plans to immortalise Oloibiri — Nigeria’s first oil discovery site through a dedicated institute.
On security, Tinubu assured the delegation that his administration remains resolute in tackling terrorism, banditry and other threats. He said security forces are making steady progress and will continue until peace and stability are restored.
The President also paid tribute to former President Goodluck Jonathan, describing him as a good leader and reaffirming his commitment to democratic values, justice and fairness. He said sustained cooperation with Niger Delta communities would be key to accelerating development and strengthening national stability.
