KEY POINTS

  • Rivers APC faction led by Emeka Beke opposes impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy.
  • The group says the process is politically driven and linked to unresolved disputes within the PDP.
  • Lawmakers are urged to resist external pressure and discontinue actions that could destabilise the state.

A group within the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State has spoken out against the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu. They say the move is politically motivated and will cause instability.

Emeka Beke led the faction, which told members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to resist what it called pressure from outside the legislature.

The appeal came after the governor and his deputy were impeached during a plenary session on Thursday.

Assembly cites threat to democracy

Speaker Martins Amaewhule said during the session that Fubara and Odu were a threat to democracy in the state. The event has made political tensions in Rivers worse, where there have been long-running rivalries and factional disputes between parties.

Darlington Nwauju, the APC faction’s spokesperson, said in a statement that the party had taken note of what it called “unfortunate developments” coming from the assembly.

The group agreed that the legislature had a constitutional role and powers of oversight, but they said impeachment was not the right thing to do right now.

It said it couldn’t stay quiet while political problems from the past that were related to the People’s Democratic Party were allowed to come back and make an APC-led government unstable.
