KEY POINTS
- A Triton Aviation private jet lost a door shortly after taking off from Abuja for Lagos on Thursday.
- The crew declared an emergency and returned safely to Abuja, although injuries have not been confirmed.
- Aviation authorities had yet to issue an official statement, and the cause of the incident remained unclear.
A private jet operated by Triton Aviation was forced to make an emergency landing in Abuja after a door reportedly detached from the aircraft shortly after takeoff, raising fresh concerns about aviation safety and aircraft maintenance in Nigeria.
The aircraft, identified as a CL60 with registration number T7-SEI and flight identification DWC052, was travelling from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja to Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos when the incident occurred.
According to an incident report, the emergency happened at approximately 4:20 p.m., shortly after the aircraft departed Abuja.
The crew reportedly notified air traffic control that a door had opened during the flight. Following the alert, the approach radar controller instructed the aircraft to return to its departure airport.
The jet subsequently returned to Abuja and made an emergency landing. The available report did not establish whether the aircraft sustained additional damage or whether anyone on board was injured.
Detached Door Reportedly Found on a Farm
A social media influencer, @ChuksEricE, shared a video showing the aircraft and the detached door. The door was reportedly found on a local farm where it had fallen.
The circumstances surrounding the detachment remain unclear. It is also yet to be established whether the door came loose because of a mechanical fault, a problem with its locking mechanism, inadequate maintenance or another factor.
An investigation will be needed to determine what happened and whether any technical or procedural failures contributed to the incident.
The incident has raised concerns about the operational condition of private charter aircraft and the effectiveness of procedures designed to ensure passenger safety before takeoff.
A door separating from an aircraft during flight can create a serious safety hazard. Depending on the aircraft’s design and the section affected, the incident could expose occupants to significant cabin pressure changes, wind forces and other risks.
However, the precise safety implications of this incident will depend on the location and type of door involved, as well as the aircraft’s configuration and the circumstances under which it detached.
As of the time of the report, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) had not issued official statements on the incident.
The condition of the passengers and crew also remained unconfirmed in the available information.
Authorities are expected to establish the cause of the incident, assess the aircraft’s technical condition and determine whether any maintenance, inspection or operational procedures were breached.
