The approval follows Tinubu’s nomination in November 2025 and months of waiting for Mexico’s formal consent.
Mexico has formally approved the appointment of Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador, clearing a major hurdle in his diplomatic posting after months of waiting for the host country’s consent.
Omokri announced the development on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, in a post on X, saying José Manuel Briseño Flores, Chargé d’Affaires of the Mexican Embassy in Abuja, had delivered the formal diplomatic approval to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The approval, known as agrément, confirms that Mexico accepts Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador to the country. His appointment also includes concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, meaning he will represent Nigeria in those three countries alongside his primary posting in Mexico.
The development follows a lengthy process that began with President Bola Tinubu’s nomination of Omokri in November 2025.
Tinubu nominated Omokri in 2025
Omokri was among several nominees put forward by Tinubu for ambassadorial appointments in November 2025. Other nominees included former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode and former Independent National Electoral Commission chairman Mahmood Yakubu.
The Senate confirmed Omokri and other ambassadorial nominees in December 2025, completing the legislative stage of the appointment process.
On March 6, 2026, Tinubu approved the postings of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners to their respective countries. Omokri was assigned to Mexico City.
However, his posting could not be completed immediately because Mexico had yet to formally accept his nomination.
Under diplomatic practice, a country must obtain the host nation’s agrément before an ambassador can take up the appointment. The process allows the receiving country to approve the proposed representative before the formal diplomatic assignment proceeds.
Approval follows months of diplomatic waiting
In August 2026, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Mexico and Japan were among the countries that had yet to communicate formal acceptance of outstanding ambassadorial appointments.
The ministry said it was engaging the countries involved and expressed confidence that the necessary approvals would be received.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today in June, Omokri dismissed speculation that Mexico had rejected his appointment. He attributed the delay to diplomatic procedures and preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Mexico is co-hosting with the United States and Canada.
Mexico’s latest decision now resolves the outstanding approval for his posting, although the announcement does not specify when he will formally assume his duties in Mexico City.
Omokri brings political and media experience to the role
Omokri previously served as a media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan and is known for his political commentary and public engagement.
His appointment places him in charge of representing Nigeria’s interests in Mexico while maintaining diplomatic responsibilities involving Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
As ambassador, his duties will typically include strengthening bilateral relations, supporting trade and investment links, assisting Nigerian citizens and engaging with the governments and institutions of the countries to which he is accredited.
The formal approval comes as Nigeria continues the process of deploying its ambassadors and high commissioners to their assigned countries following the 2025 nomination and confirmation exercises.
