In recognition of his outstanding efforts at promoting the advancement of quality education, His Excellency, Dr. Peter Mbah, Governor of Enugu State has been conferred an honorary Doctor of Laws degree (Honoris Causa) by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). The university held the weekend 53rd convocation ceremony, which contained the recognition.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Mbah said he and his administration will continue in the path of transforming the education sector contending that education remains the best legacy for future generations. ‘We must now double our efforts to continue to serve the people and further accelerate the growth trajectory of Enugu State’s,’ he added.
Mbah pointed out that one-third of the state’s budget had gone to education over two budget cycles. He said this is investment to train young Nigerians with required competitive competencies in the dynamic global workspace.
Milestones and achievements of UNN
Similarly, congrats to the graduating students, Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Polycarp Chigbu, congratulated the students in his convocation address while also congratulating Gov. Mbah.
He said the university had also graduated 11,143 including over 1,000 postgraduates, and conferred honorary doctorate degrees on two other persons, and the title of Emeritus Professor to two individuals.
The institution had recently attained the highest scholarly ranking among Nigerian universities in the SCOPUS database, with over 7,025 full publications by more than 5,813 authors, Prof. Chigbu said.
Under his tenure, he also shared infrastructural advancements, strengthened alumni relations and innovative solutions to the university’s energy crisis.
The Acting Vice Chancellor called upon the graduating students to continue using the university’s motto, ‘Restore the Dignity of Man’, in whatever they did in their future. He charged them to be the leading lights everywhere they went, to reflect the values they imbibe when at UNN.
