KEY POINTS
- Sani bashes Tinubu for not asking about military spending during Buhari’s reign.
- It calls decision contradictory, ‘similar to the CBN probe.’
- Holds the looters accountable and their looted money recovered.
Former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani, had berated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for refusing to probe military spending under the Buhari administration, saying the decision is contradictory and rewards corruption.
Speaking, Sani compared Tinubu’s position on military spending to his investigation of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which he steered under Godwin Emefiele.
And Sani has a point, this link between military spending and CBN simply never gets probed, in which case the CBN leads to a contradictory message. We seem to be rewarding looting in one sector and not penalizing corruption in another. Essentially, this decision further rewards larceny.”
Accountability and consistency urged
Sani said an examination of past financial mismanagement is necessary to retrieve looted public funds for the national good.
He showed his disappointment to Tinubu’s remarks after the President said in a media chat that he prefers to move on and not revisit past military spending.
The evidence of corruption should lead to action. But Sani added ignoring it undermines public trust and accountability.
Sani also asked Nigerians to hold Tinubu responsible for his policies, particularly economic reforms which have left Nigerians gripping in economic hardship.
But he acknowledged reform is often painful and asked the President to walk the fine line between progress and transparency and fairness.
