The Ogun State government has issued a strong warning against any attempt to establish a Sharia Court in the state. Governor Dapo Abiodun made it clear that courts must be constituted under the Nigerian Constitution or state laws, and any entity operating outside this legal framework is considered illegal.
The warning follows the circulation of a digital notice announcing the launch of a Sharia Court in the state.
The government quickly responded, affirming that Ogun only recognizes courts established under the law, including Magistrates’ Courts, High Court, Customary Courts, and the Supreme Court.
“No Sharia Court is authorized to operate within Ogun State,” the governor stated, adding that individuals or groups attempting to establish such courts have no legal backing.
Public urged to disregard illegal court activities
Governor Abiodun emphasized that while Ogun State upholds religious freedom, this does not extend to the formation of unauthorized judicial bodies.
Also, he stressed that no individual or group has the right to create a court or administer justice outside the law.
“The Ogun State government upholds and protects the rights of individuals to practice their religion freely. However, this does not permit the unauthorized establishment of courts,” the statement read.
However, he governor directed that any person involved in the operation of the unauthorized court must cease all activities immediately.
According to Vanguard, he also advised residents to ignore any summons, documents, or legal actions originating from the illegal Sharia Court and report such incidents to the authorities.
Rule of law will be enforced
The state government of Ogun reiterated its intention to maintain legal obligations and keep judicial procedures within constitutional limits.
Abiodun declared his government would accept zero tolerance toward any type of lawlessness or disorder.
“All persons involved in the creation or operation of this unauthorized court must immediately disband and stop all activities,” he ordered.
“The government will take necessary action against those who attempt to operate outside the law.”
Furthermore, the administration reiterated that maintaining peace and stability is a priority, and it will continue to prevent any unauthorized legal structures that could cause confusion or disrupt governance.
